During your Purescapes retreat, you may take part in a wide range of activities: Yoga, hiking, one-on-one training, swimming, running, kayaking, stand up paddleboarding, group exercises, biking. But don’t let that list scare you as our activities are designed for everyone and there is room to modify every activity to meet any level of fitness. That means if you’re already fit you’ll be challenged, and if your lifestyle is less active or you’ve fallen into a rut this will energize you and get you going again. The most important quality you can bring to this experience, more than any physical preparation, is a positive mental outlook and a willingness to participate. The rest we can help you achieve. We design the activities according to the group. One-on-one activities are based on your abilities while group activities attempt to accommodate different ability levels.

The time you take between activities is as important as the time you spend working. Your body needs to repair and restore. You’ll be given time mid-to-late afternoon to have a massage, lie on the beach or by the pool, read a book or sleep. For the more energetic, one-on-one training or running is scheduled.

Bespoke organic ultra-healthy food

The menu is directed by the bounty of the on-site vegetable gardens, local farms, and the nearby fishing ports. Enjoy a luxury culinary experience in the garden terrace with our bespoke menu.

At all of our retreats, we design the menu according to numerous discussions with our guests and their preferred meal options. Our menu is not calorie restricted, but all of the meals prepared for you are gourmet, delicious, nutritious, natural, and organic. We offer fruits and vegetables of the region as well as fresh fish and meat. In your questionnaire, please advise us if you are a vegan or vegetarian. If you’re hoping to lose weight, this may provide the perfect kick-start.

You will learn a great deal about nutrition and how to accelerate your metabolic rate and fitness level by making the right food choices for your unique biochemical profile. magical Location

Our Algarve location is a secluded luxury Country House in the heart of the authentic Eastern Algarve of rolling countryside, saltpans, and small bustling towns full of character. The region is completed by local fishing ports and a wide range of beaches that form part of the UNESCO-protected Ria Formosa coastline as it sweeps down to Spain.

Set on twenty-five acres of orchards including carob, almond, olive and pomegranate, the award-winning Fazenda Nova is a 19th-century luxury country house that has been beautifully renovated to combine a modern style with traditional architecture. 

Bordered by lavender and rosemary, the swimming pool is a wonderful spot to unwind and survey all that surrounds you. A series of paths lead you to undiscovered wilder areas where you can reflect and relax.  Shady areas are perfect for settling down with a great book.

What does a typical day look like at Healthset 2017?

Here’s a typical day from our retreats:

• 7:00 AM Morning Energizer activity: Yoga, Qi-Gong, fitness circuits
• 8.30 AM Breakfast – a bounty of fresh fruit and high-quality dishes to fuel your active day
• 9:30 AM Local adventure (hiking, biking, SUP, kayaking)
• 12:30 PM Lunch
• 1:30 PM Free time to soak up the sun, rest, get a massage, swim, read
• 4:00 PM Nutrition, Movement and Technique Workshops or individual one-on-one nutrition counseling
• 5:00 PM Functional training, barefoot beach walks/runs, boxing or group circuits
• 6:00 PM Restorative Yoga, stretch
• 7:15 Briefing: Learn about what awaits tomorrow
• 7:30 PM Delicious dinner – refuel your body

This is only a sample standard day on our Retreats. Depending on the season and location, activities will vary. We always take time for local adventures and will surprise you with challenges that venture further afield. All of our locations are picked for their uniquely beautiful landscapes.

  • Steamed sea bass stuffed with sun-dried tomatoes and herbs. Served with traditional Portuguese sauce
  • Steamed vegetables
  • Cinnamon poached apple or pears with toasted walnuts

Bios

Dr. Greg Wells

As a scientist, broadcaster, author, coach and athlete, Dr. Greg Wells has dedicated his career to understanding human health and performance.

Dr. Wells is an assistant professor of kinesiology at the University of Toronto where he studies elite sport performance. He also serves as an associate scientist of physiology and experimental medicine at The Hospital for Sick Children where he leads the Exercise Medicine Research Program. There, he and his team explore how to use exercise to prevent, diagnose and treat chronic illnesses in children. Previously, he served as the director of sport science at the Canadian Sport Institute, and taught elite sport coaches at the National Coaching Institute.

Throughout his career, Dr. Wells has coached, trained and inspired dozens of elite athletes to win medals at World Championships, the Commonwealth Games and the Olympics. He has studied athletic performance in some of the most severe conditions on the planet, like the Andes Mountains and the Sahara Desert.

Dr. Wells has had his own personal experience with the challenges and opportunities of adversity and human extremes. Late in his high school career, he broke his neck in a freak accident while swimming in the ocean and was in a halo brace before undergoing neurosurgery. Told by his doctor that he would never perform as an athlete again, he went on to compete at the international level in swimming. He has competed in events such as the Nanisivik Marathon - 600 miles north of the Arctic Circle - Ironman Canada, and the Tour D’Afrique, a grueling 11,000-kilometre event that is the longest bike race in the world.

A sought after speaker on the topic of human performance, Dr. Wells has spoken at top events like TEDX and the Titan Summit, alongside Sir Richard Branson. Dr. Wells is a frequent contributor to The Globe and Mail and has been an expert source to other top media outlets like ABC News, “20/20,” The Discovery Channel, TSN, CBC and CTV. He also served as the sports medicine analyst for the Canadian Olympic Broadcast Consortium for the 2010 and 2012 Olympic Games.

Reza’s extensive experience researching location and program formats led to the development of the Purescapes program, designed to meet the needs of an exclusive niche clientele with a primary wellness travel focus. He has specialised in end-to-end development and execution of internationally acclaimed, luxury programs at destinations including Portugal, Spain, Italy, France, Holland, Mozambique, Canary Islands, and various Caribbean locations. Through a detailed focus and systems approach, he has delivered on all aspects of sales, marketing, product delivery, customer experience, and operations management. Reza successfully executed multiple PR campaigns on a national and international basis with articles published in various magazines including Condé Nast Traveler, Harper’s Bazaar, and Men’s Health UK.
